Ahmedabad Artist Popularises One-Man-Band Format Through Innovative Live Performances
In an era dominated by large bands and elaborate stage productions, Ahmedabad-based artist Ankit Patel has carved a niche for himself through the distinctive concept of the one-man band.
Combining live singing with instrumental performance, Ankit has spent the past nine years refining a solo act that enables him to entertain audiences without a conventional band. He has performed at more than 2,000 events across India and overseas, including in Thailand, Vietnam, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the UAE
According to Ankit, the concept was unfamiliar in Ahmedabad when he first introduced it.
“When people attend a musical performance, they usually expect to see multiple musicians and singers on stage. The challenge was to demonstrate that a single performer could create an equally engaging and dynamic experience,” he says.
The one-man band format allows Ankit to sing while simultaneously performing on the keyboard, enabling smooth transitions between genres and musical styles.
“One of the biggest advantages of performing alone is flexibility. I can instantly move from Bollywood to retro music, from Gujarati songs to international numbers, depending on the audience. There are no limitations,” he explains.

Ankit recently marked a significant milestone in his musical journey by presenting his first ticketed one-man-band concert at HK Hall in Ahmedabad. Attended by more than 500 music lovers, the performance received an enthusiastic response, demonstrating the growing appetite for innovative live music experiences.
Having learnt tabla, dholak, guitar and keyboard over the years, Ankit says the experience gained from different instruments has helped shape his performance style. His engineering background has also contributed to the development and execution of the concept.
“Live performance is both an art and a technical process. My training as an engineer helps me understand sound, timing, coordination and stage execution. It allows me to approach every show with a structured mindset,” he says.
The format, which enjoys significant popularity in several international markets, has also found acceptance among audiences at weddings, corporate functions and social events.

Ankit believes that the future of live entertainment lies in innovation and adaptability.
“Audiences today are looking for experiences rather than just performances. As artists, we have to continuously evolve and find new ways to connect with people,” he said.
With increasing demand for his solo performances and his growing recognition, Ankit continues to expand the one-man band format while pursuing his goal of establishing himself as a singer, recording artist and creator of original music.
